When Buying a House - Remember - The Perfect House Does Not Exist

With current low interest rates and low house prices, this could be a good time to buy if you find the right property.  It is important to make sure you buy the right home the first time.

Don't let yourself feel like you have to buy a house now because of where the interest rates are, or because you're tired of where you're currently living. Bad home purchase decisions are often made under pressure. But on the other hand, you don’t want to be searching for a home that is perfect - that meets all of your criteria.

Here are some tips to help as you start looking at houses.

Don't be distracted by a home with a really good decorating job (or good home staging job). You're buying the house not the décor and furnishings. Force yourself to make sure that the house offers you the features and amenities you need.

Before making a commitment to buy, make a list of the features that your current home doesn’t have that you want and what you need in the new house. This will help you make a comprehensive wish list that doesn't leave out something important.  When making your list, determine what you want to have in a house and what you really need to have.  Know ahead of time what things you can do without – and which features you can’t live without.

For example, if you entertain a lot, you'll want a home with generous living room/family room/kitchen spaces. If you're a serious cook, the kitchen amenities will be a priority. However, if you don’t cook much, a fabulous kitchen may not be as important.

Compromising is a part of the home-buying process. Remember - the perfect house doesn't exist.  If you are searching for the perfect house – then chances are you are missing out on some wonderful houses that might be perfect for you and your family.
