I just visited a new home development in Riverside CA today. The builder is D. R. Horton. It is located in the hills between Riverside (near La Sierra University and east of McKinley) called The Highlands. The road near the back side of La Sierra University is blocked but you can easily reach the community either from Buchanan St. or from Promenade off McKinley. Its good that we are finally seeing new homes being built in Riverside again. We had quite a "drought" of new home building for quite some time. Without a stronger economy, though, the number of newly built homes won't increase to the boom years before the market crash.
There are two model homes available to see in The Highlands and there are four different floor plans. They range from the smallest floor plan which is a single story which is 2798 sq ft. to the largest plan is up to 3866 sq ft with either 5 or 6 bedrooms. The homes come with granite slab in the kitchen, stainless steel appliances and pantry.
Once fully completed, there will be a total of 72 houses in this development. Most of the lots are about 8000 sq ft in size. But there are some larger lots but they have slopes. The HOA fee is $90 and will be reduced to $65 once all the houses are built. The property tax rate is 1.9% - which is pretty high because of the Mello-Roos in this community - but not unusual for new homes in the Inland Empire. The school district is Alvord.
I've never had any experienced with DR Horton - so I can't speak to the quality of their homes. But I did enjoy seeing the model homes and the community.
